BA2 - Creating a 3D Gargoyle

GARGOYLES -

(taken from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gargoyle )

In architecture, a gargoyle is a carved or formed grotesque with a spout designed to convey water from a roof and away from the side of a building, thereby preventing rainwater from running down masonry walls and eroding the mortar between.

New term, new project, and this one looks like its going to be interesting, we are tasked to create a 3D model and a turntable render of a gargoyle in our own designs, its totally up to us how we portray it, we choose the era and even the art style.

The Beginning

I start the project off by getting to grips with Zbrush, after a few years of not using it and with the new additions Zbrush proved to be very different.

The images below are the few practices i put myself through

                               1.

                              2.

                           3.

                                4.

As you can see, by number  4 i was starting to feel confident again in my abilities with Zbrush.

Research

During the practices I also did research, firstly i researched basic gargoyles of many kinds:
(these are a few of the hundreds i found)

I noticed alot of gargoyles are either demons or creatures, along with this i also took an interest into redesigns of fairy tale creatures:

I then sat down one night and watched one of the "puppet master" films, i took a liking to one puppet "jester" he had 3 separate sections to his head, this ment he could shift one part of his head to portray different emotions:

Now this would be useless on a gargoyle, but i then came up with an idea to have 3 different faced emotions on the front and sides of a face, this will give me the option to have 3 different directed water spouts. To stick with the puppet master theme i also will have the puppet master above, leaning over "controlling" the 3 faced human, I say human as i want the body to look organic, like the sculptor wanted to portray the control others have over us, and the 3 faces to show they have control over more then one emotion.
(further research will be uploaded in a future post)

The puppet master will be some sort of devil, over the next ten days i will iterate both puppet and master to exhaustion.

THE PLAN:

20th - 30th january : Iteration for puppet and master and final design

31st - 9th febuary : final 3D piece and turn table render

10th - 18th febuary : Contextual studies essay (i will explain in a future post)
