Lighting analysis BA1

So the entirety of year 1 were tasked on analyzing lighting in 2 different pieces, so lets begin:

Image 1
Piece by : Chris J. Anderson   Link: http://www.leewiart.com/excellentres/239.html

As you can see by my arrows there is quite a lot going on in this image, its probably about mid day in the image, the sun is high in the sky which means A LOT of objects are covered only allowing the taller more prominent objects are creating shadows.

(top right) As pointed out the sun is hitting the rock, lighting up that area and slightly dragging your eyes towards it, i say its a sun but it could be anything as you can see at the bottom the characters are paused motionless, maybe watching/looking at something?

(top left) The reaction of the light hitting the rock in turn means there is a large shadow cascaded onto the track, pulling and darkening all the colors in that area, giving it a frosted looking meaning you have to look closer to observe what is there.

(bottom left and right) To the left there is another light source entering from off the image, lighting up the backs of each character, To the right there is another shadow, maybe another rock being hit by the first light source, which means the two shadows in this image are joining up to create one long and consistent shadow all the way up the image.

Tera Online Concept  (artist and location unknown, this is not my work!)

(top right) its clear this structure is below ground, as you can see trees over growing the roof faintly among the bright light, the light has a blueish tinge to it maybe suggesting it is night time and the moon is creating the light, but as you can see due to the light being above it lights up everything, there are minimal shadows being made, only on things under neither or with a slight over hang.

(middle left middle right) these two are pointing out the fluid falling from the vase high above the statues head, the vase being so high in relation to the fluid glowing could suggest the light source from above is adding some sort of magical light/making the fluid glow, this specific glow draws your eyes to this focal point, making it the (along with the statue) the primary subject in this image, this also means the light sources as a whole are the subject matter for this concept adding some mystique and wonder to this concept.

all in all both images create alot of mysterious aspects and lingering questions, purely from the light sources alone, i hope you enjoyed this analysis, more Project work to come this week!

So, its finally happening!

Silhouettes 1

So first go at it and it turned out "okay", abit to precise for my liking but still came out okay, these are just practices to get my barrings

i then figured "hey, just scribble" so i did just that and iterate one to see what process worked best, over sketching in white worked well for me so i think i will stick with that!

Lets Go

so after the practices i found what i wanted and how i wanted it.

I started with the 100 silhouettes we were tasked with, i ended up doing 170ish before i found some i liked, i numbered them 1, 2, 3 one being when i started and 3 being when i ended it

i decided to go with mostly figures from section 2, as these were the most loose and had the most variation, i then continued to place 6 onto a page and figure out the poses, just over sketching in white like before the base shapes for limbs torsos and lower halfs, i aimed for very dynamic poses to really push my anatomy

this is as far as i have gotten so far, next up is to iterate each one further and figure out different clothing for each one, my favorite so far is the bottom right he looks the most like a highwayman and the top right may be used for the character/model sheets as that has the most "cockyness" about it, ive also got to do some research into thumbnails and Georgian era structures/environments!

See you soon!

The Beginning of Time

Start

So here we are, 2 weeks into uni and i thought i should start my blog!
lots of things to post and keep everyone up to date on, received a lot of useful tips and tricks from a few lectures and group crits!, tutors are awesome and the course so far is absolutely baller!

First Project

The TinderBox by Hans Christian Andersen

Our task was to read the above story, and to come up with 2 final pieces 1 environment and 2 environment with an inserted character, our process is to go from silhouettes, to then iterate our chosen silhouettes and apply further detail.

For the environments we need 4 thumbnails 500x250 pixels and 4 color studies of the same size, and the two final pieces 1 environment 1 environment with the character somewhere in it.

Research

My character being one of the dogs (gold) i chose to do a Georgian Era highwayman, the elegance and mystique really drew me to them, my characters back story is mainly the highwayman after being saved by the soldier from the clutches of the evil witch is now indebted to him for saving his life, so the highwayman comes to the aid of the soldier whenever he calls!

here is some image reference from my research

I always researched on standard Georgian Era clothing to get an over all feel of what the fashion was like back then (an i was quite pleased to find out pirates were around during that time!)

so thats that for now, Sil's and Iteration to follow!
